All Research Projects

Water Quality and Environmental Remediation

The projects involve water quality, fate and transport of contaminants in water and soil, and environmental remediation (e.g., PFAS, pesticides, nutrients). The undergraduate students will get ample opportunities to learn the new knowledge on emerging contaminants, their fate and transport behaviors in water systems, and cutting-edge remediation technologies in the subsurface environment.

Principal Investigator: Dengjun Wang, Dengjun.wang@ufl.edu; 352-294-7969
Terms Available: Fall, Spring, Summer
Student Level Preferred: Junior or Senior
Type of Research Opportunity: For volunteer, paid, credit
Location: UF Campus

Development and Application of Water Quality Sensing Platforms

This project involves supporting the development and validation of water quality sensors for field applications. Activities may include collection of data and water samples from field sites, laboratory preparation of standard solutions, laboratory analysis of water samples, improving sensor designs and operation, and developing calibration models. Specific research goals, objectives, and tasks will be decided jointly between the Principal Investigator (faculty member), graduate student, and student.

Experimental Study of Pesticides Residues in Grass Bufferstrips

The study will use a sophisticated laboratory set up to study all the dynamic components (hydrological, soil, vegetation chemical) that control the removal of pesticides by grass buffers and what happens to the pesticide residues in time.

Principal Investigator: Rafael Muñoz-Carpena, carpena@ufl.edu
Terms Available: Summer
Student Level Preferred: Junior or Senior
Type of Research Opportunity: For Credit or Volunteer Position
Location: UF Campus

Plant X Environment

Students will study how plants are affected by their environment to build tools to study and manage crops.

Principal Investigator: Dr. Melanie Correll, correllm@ufl.edu
Terms Available: Fall
Student Level Preferred: Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior
Type of Research Opportunity: For Credit or Volunteer Position

Strawberry Yield Mapping using a Robot and Artificial Intelligence

We are developing a strawberry yield mapping system using a robot and artificial intelligence. Field images will be acquired weekly in a strawberry field at PSREU in Citra, FL. Strawberry flowers and fruit will be counted in the field and in the images. Strawberries will be harvested weekly, and what you harvest is free for you to take

Principal Investigator: Dr. Daniel Lee, wslee@ufl.edu
Terms Available: Fall, Spring
Student Level Preferred: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
Type of Research Opportunity: Volunteer Position

Precision Irrigation Management

This research involves the development of a micro sprinkler irrigation system that is capable of both bare-root transplant establishment and freeze-frost protection that is conservative in water use without adverse effects on strawberry production.

Principal Investigator: Vivek Sharma, vsharma1@ufl.edu
Terms Available: Fall
Student Level Preferred: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
Type of Research Opportunity: Paid Position
Location: Multiple Locations
Application Requirements: Resume and Faculty Interview
