Rafael Muñoz-Carpena is what you might call one of the new hydrologists. In addition to traditional hydrology, studying how water moves through the environment, he incorporates ecological factors, such as the impact of water use on plants, animals, and the local environment, and uses computer modeling to quantify effects and create mathematically based management tools.

Graduate Student

About Rio

My journey began on a cattle ranch in southern Oklahoma, where a deep connection to the land and a love for the outdoors sparked my interest in water research. Through collaboration with Blackfeet Community College, my graduate work integrates Traditional Ecological Knowledge with modern hydrology, computational techniques, and AI to better understand and predict flooding.

Isabella Plumier

Isabella Plumier

Graduate Student

About Isabella

Originally from a Belgian-Polish family, Isabella grew up in Belgium, where she developed a strong interest in science, the environment, and contributing meaningfully to today’s global challenges. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Sciences (Bioengineering focus) and her Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Technologies from UCLouvain (Université Catholique de Louvain), graduating magna cum laude in 2024. Her master’s research focused on hydrological processes in wetland ecosystems, studying the water balance dynamics in the sub-wetlands of Palo Verde National Park in Costa Rica. This experience deepened her curiosity for research and hydrological modeling.

Since May 2025, Isabella has been a Ph.D. student in Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida, working with Dr. Rafael Muñoz-Carpena and Dr. Vivek Sharma. Her project, “Measurement and Modeling of Leaching Rain Events under Different Soil and Climate Settings,” explores the mechanisms of leaching rainfall and its broader implications for water quality, irrigation, and sustainable land management.

B.S. in Engineering Sciences. UCLouvain (Belgium), 2024
M.S. in Environmental Sciences and Technologies, UCLouvain (Belgium), 2022
