Asante Akim Central Municipal District

Urbanization

The Asante Akim Central Municipal District (AACMD) has experienced rapid urbanization fueled by its proximity to Kumasi and strategic location on the Accra-Kumasi road.

More than 60% of the population lives in cities, including 50,000 people in Konongo, the district capital.

Land use

Soil and weather conditions in AACMD are favorable to the cultivation of food crops that are sold to nearby markets or processed as flour grains.

A third of the district’s population works in the agricultural sector. Gold deposits are related to the presence of mining activities in the district.

Deforestation

Forests have become more fragmented in the last two decades. Large portions of degraded forest are now cultivated.
