The ABE department has an outstanding faculty and staff who garner a wide array of awards and recognitions.


2008 Awards

Fedro Zazueta

Fedro Zazueta, Director and Professor

Fedro Zazueta was named a co-winner of the 2008 Kishida International Award by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. He shares the honor with K.C. Ting from the University of Illinois. The award honors outstanding contributions toward food and fiber production, improved living, and education outside the United States. Zazueta, an ASABE Fellow, is being recognized for his outstanding worldwide accomplishments in information technology in agriculture and natural resources through research, teaching, extension programs, and technology transfer.

Ray Bucklin

Ray Bucklin, Professor

Dr. Ray Bucklin was named a Fellow by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. Dr. Bucklin is recognized worldwide for his reseach and extension programs, which have resulted in significant improvements to dairy housing and milk production. His current research includes working with NASA personnel to develop methods for growing plants on lengthy space missions. Members selected as Fellows demonstrate unusual professional distinction, with outstanding qualifications and experience in the field of agricultural engineering. Twenty years' membership in ASABE is also required. Only about two percent of the active members of ASABE have achieved the grade of Fellow.

The UF ASABE Student Club received an award for the Most Attractive Fountain at the annual ASABE meeting in Providence, Rhode Island.

 

William Miller

William Miller, Professor Emeritus

Bill Miller received the 2008 Citrus Engineering Award. The award is sponsored by Progress Energy and was presented at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 54th Florida Section Citrus Engineering Conference. Dr. Miller was also named a 2008 ASABE Fellow at the national meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Viki Keener

Viki Keener, ABE Graduate Student

Vicki Keener's entry titled, “Categorical ENSO effects on simulated phosphorus loading in South Florida” received a 1st place award in the student poster competition at the Climate Information for Managing Risks (CIMR) Symposium. Viki is a Ph.D. student specializing in climate and hydrological modeling.

Nathan Wangusi

Nathan Wangusi, ABE Graduate Student

Nathan Wangusi has been awarded a one-year Rotary Foundation Scholarship which will supplement his doctoral research project  titled “ Integrated Watershed and River Modeling for Adaptive Learning and Management in the Crocodile River Basin, South Africa”. The research revolves around trying to find solutions for water and land resource conflicts between indigenous Southern Africans, wildlife within the Kruger National Park, commercial and rural farmers and industry owners amongst other stake holders within the Crocodile River Basin using adaptive management and computer modeling technologies. Nathan will begin his work in South Africa in 2009.

 

Jasmeet Judge

Jasmeet Judge, Associate Professor

Jasmeet Judge was named the ASABE Florida Section Young Researcher. The award honors dedicated use of scientific methodology to seek out facts or principles significant to agricultural engineering. Dr. Judge specializes in Remote Sensing.

 

Michael Dukes

Michael Dukes, Associate Professor

Mike Dukes was named the ASABE Florida Section Young Extension Worker. This award honors outstanding success in motivating people to acquire knowledge, skills and understanding to improve agricultural operations. Dr. Dukes specializes in irrigation.

Jose Reyes-De-Corcuera

Jose Reyes-De-Corcuera

Jose Reyes was selected as the ASABE Florida Section Young Engineer. It is presented to an engineer, 40 or younger, in the field of Ag Engineering and is a leader who represents the profession thru his or her work.

 

Jim Leary

James Leary, Senior Lecturer

Dr. Jim Leary was presented with a Distinguished Achievement Award by the ASABE Florida Section. It is awarded to an individual who is active in the state section and in the profession of Agricultural Engineering. Recipient has typically served as active member of the Executive Committee.

Lauren Hunter

Lauren Hunter, ABE Student

Lauren Hunter was presented with the Outstanding Student Award by the ASABE Florida Section. Lauren recently graduated with an ABE degree, specializing in Land and Water Resources Engineering.

Zuzanna Zajac and Eban Bean

Zuzanna Zajac and Eban Bean, Graduate Students

Zuzanna and Eban were awarded first and second place, respectively, in the student paper competition at the Florida Section ASABE conference

 

Stacia Davis

Stacia Davis, ABE Graduate Student

Stacia Davis won 3rd place in the Florida State Horticultural Society (FSHS) Student Paper competition.The title of her paper was “Irrigation Application Using Evapotranspiration-Based Irrigation Controllers.”

Fernando Vargas

Fernando Luis Vargas, PKG Graduate Student

Fernando Vargas' poster titled, "Degradation of Polylactic Acid (PLA) Exposed to Steam" was selected as the winner of the student poster competition at the Society of Plastics Engineers GPEC 2008 Conference. Fernando is a doctoral student specializing in Packaging Science.

Maggie Lanigan , ABE Student

Maggie Lanigan was awarded the Gamma Sigma Delta Undergraduate Scholarship (presented by Dr. Elaine Turner) at the GSD Initiation and Awards Reception. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Jonathan Earle

Jonathan Earle, Associate Dean for Student Affairs

Dr. Jonathan Earle is the first UF faculty member to receive the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. He was honored as one of only 10 recipients nationwide in a ceremony at the White House. Dr. Earle was recognized for his work to create several mentoring and outreach programs including the STEPUP program which has had a huge impact on the success of underrepresented minority students in earning engineering degrees.

2007 Awards

Melanie Correll

Melanie Correll, Assistant Professor

Dr. Melanie Correll was awarded the NASA and European Space Agency Award which honors outstanding accomplishments in spaceflight research.She was recognized for her work on project TROPI which was a series of experiments that were performed on the International Space Station.

Alex Stimpson and Rhea Pereira

ABE Graduate Student Alex Stimpson and ABE Undergraduate Rhea Savia Pereira were winners in the Student Poster Competition at the American Society of Gravitational and Space Biology (ASGSB) conference. The title of Alex Stimpson's poster was "RNA Extraction from Plants Grown on the International Space Station." Alex won 2nd place in the Graduate Plant Poster.

The title of Rhea Pereira's poster was "Gene Expression of Red Light Signaling Pathways in Arabidopsis Using Only 5 Seedlings." Rhea won 1st place in the Undergraduate Plant Poster.

Elana Rich

Elana Rich, ABE Graduate Student

Elana Rich was selected as the winner of the 2007 Marvin Byer Award for her submission to the annual graduate student competition sponsored by Research and Development Associates (R&DA) for Military and Food and Packaging Systems. Elana's topic was Heat Penetration Studies on Shelf-stable Ethnic Foods in Retortable Trays. The R&DA is a professional organization with memberships from US military, government, universities, and the food industry.

Ray Bucklin

Ray Bucklin, Professor

Ray Bucklin was selected to receive the Henry Giese Structures and Environment Award from the National Association of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). The award honors distinguished service in advancing the knowledge and science of agricultural structures and environment. Dr. Bucklin is recognized worldwide for his reseach and extension programs, which have resulted in significant improvements to dairy housing and milk production. His current research includes working with NASA personnel to develop methods for growing plants on lengthy space missions.

Bruce Welt

Bruce Welt, Associate Professor and PKG Undergraduate Coordinator

Bruce Welt was named a North American Colleges and Teachers of America (NACTA) 2007 Teacher Fellow. Selections are based on teaching philosophy; evaluations by current students, alumni, administrative officers, and peers; a self-evaluation as well as factors such as availability to students, teaching innovations, and departmental/institutional activity.

The 2007 ABE Fountain Wars Team received third place in the annual G.B. Gunlogson Environmental Student Design Competition at the ASABE National Meeting in Minneapolis.Team members (l-r) include Maggie Lanigan, Jon Alldrige, David Palubin, Colleen Howard, Jack Cowen and Lauren Hunter.

Michael Dukes

Michael Dukes, Associate Professor

Michael Dukes was selected to receive the Outstanding Service Award from the Florida Section ASABE. The award was presented at the annual meeting in June. This award is given to a member of the society who has served the section with distinction. Dukes was also awarded an Outstanding Reviewer Award in the Soil and Water Division by the national ASABE in recognition of his help in ensuring high quality ASABE peer-reviewed journals. Only 10 reviewers are recognized annually.

Tom Burks

Tom Burks was also awarded an Outstanding Reviewer Award by the national ASABE in recognition of his help in ensuring high quality peer-reviewed journals in the Power and Machinery Division.

 

Melanie Correll

Melanie Correll, Assistant Professor

Melanie Correll was selected as as the recipient of the Florida Section ASABE Young Researcher Award. The award honors dedicated use of scientific methodology to seek out facts or principles significant to agricultural engineering.

Larry Shaw

Lawrance Shaw, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Larry Shaw was presented with a pin recognizing 50 Years of Service to the Florida Section ASABE.

 

Robert Peart

Robert Peart , Professor Emeritus

Robert Peart , along with Wayne Maley and Ben Jones were presented with a plaque recognizing their Presidential Service Award . It was presented by ASABE for their work as co-authors of a book titled "Three Decades of Change - ASAE to ASABE".

 

ASABE Honorable Mention Paper Award

Susana Sepúlveda Bustos, Fedro Zazueta, Ray Bucklin and E. Holzapfel Hoces received an Honorable Mention Paper Award for their paper entitled Rapid Prototyping of Learning Objects for Agricultural and Biological Engineering Education. Paper awards are presented to the top 5% of papers published in ASABE refereed journals. 

 

ASABE Scholarship Recipients

Kevin Bray and Sheevani Bhalsod were awarded Florida Section ASABE Scholarships at the annual meeting.

Mary Shedd

Mary Shedd, ABE Graduate Student

Mary Shedd was Second Place in the Graduate Student Paper Competition at the 2007 Soil and Crop Science Society of Florida in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, June 3-5.  The competition consisted of an abstract and oral competition.  Her paper was entitled “Evapotranspiration and Soil Moisture-based Irrigation Control on Turfgrass Compared to Theoretical Requirements”.

Prinda Wanakule

Prinda Wanakule, ABE Student

Prinda Wanakule was selected as one of only two recipients of an Outstanding Gator Engineering 4 Year Scholar Award from the Engineering Commencement Committee. Students are selected through an application and essay process based on scholastic achievements, academic awards, honoraria, research projects, published papers, conference presentations, and honors theses. 

She graduated cum laude with a BS in biological engineering and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.  To support her studies, Wanakule received a Doctoral Fellowship from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, as well as a THRUST Fellowship from the University of Texas at Austin's College of Engineering.
Robin Snyder

Robin Snyder, Coordinator of Information/Publications

Robin Snyder was selected as a recipient of an Silver Image Award from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). She was recognized for her production of the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department's 2006 Spring/Summer Newsletter.

Stuart Muller wins Alec Courtelis Award

Stuart Muller, Graduate Student

Stuart Muller was selected as a recipient of an Alec Courtelis Award from the University of Florida International Center. Stuart is a Ph.D. student from South Africa. He has volunteered his services to NSF integrated Graduate Education and Research Training, is a member of three organizations and holds an officer's position with the UF chapter of the American Water Resources Association. He is also active in environmental efforts in and around Gainesville.

Celilia Amador

Cecilia Amador, Graduate Student

Cecilia Amador was selected as a recipient of an Outstanding Student Award, from the UF International Center. Cecilia is a Student Government Senator, Vice-President Elect of the Graduate Student Council, and President of the Hispanic Graduate Student Association.

Bruce Welt

Dr. Bruce Welt was selected as a recipient of an NACTA Teacher Fellow Award, which is a criterion based award and is reviewed by a committee of NACTA members. Criteria included in the evaluation are the instructor's teaching philosophy; evaluations submitted by current students, alumni, administrative officers, and peers; a self-evaluation as well as factors such as availability to students, teaching innovations, and departmental/institutional activity.

Mary Garvin

Mary Garvin was selected as a recipient of a 2007 Superior Accomplishment Award from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The award recognizes IFAS employees who have been nominated for outstanding performance.

 

2006 Awards

Wendell Porter

Wendell Porter, Lecturer

AOM Undergraduate Coordinator

Dr.Wendell Porter was selected as a 2006 Outstanding Educator in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Dr. Porter was nominated by AOM student Roger Gayle. The award recognizes faculty whose support and guidance helped students accomplish their academic goals.

James Jones

James Jones, Distinguished Professor

Dr. Jim Jones was selected as a recipient of the 2006 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award by The National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) Commission on International Programs. This award provides national recognition for a career of outstanding contributions that furthers international education of state and land-grant institutions. Dr. Jones was also named a Fellow by the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). The award is presented to members who have made outstanding contributions in their area of specialization.

Ken Campbell

Ken Campbell, Professor and Interim Chair

Dr. Kenneth Campbell is the recipient of the 2006 Hancor Soil and Water Engineering Award for his expertise and accomplishments in the area of soil and water engineering through research, teaching, technology transfer and service activities. He was honored for his leadership and contributions toward watershed protection through the development of improved prediction models for runoff volume, peak rate and nutrient load.


Robert Peart

Robert Peart, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Robert Peart was awarded the 2006 Cyrus Hall McCormick-Jerome Increase Case Gold Medal Award for exceptional and meritorius engineering achievements. He was honored for his commitment and contributions to teaching and research in the application of computer simulation technology that has addressed a wide range of complex agricultural problems.

Professor & Director Office of Academic Technology

Dr. Fedro Zazueta was awarded the ASABE Outstanding Leadership Award for his efforts and successes promoting the use of information technology in agriculture. Dr. Zazueta helped to found and organize the first four World Congresses on Computers in Agriculture, the premier conference concerning information technology in agriculture. He was also selected as the 2006 Florida Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta nominee for the International GSD Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.   This award recognizes Dr. Zazueta's superior leadership in teaching, research, extension, and service to Florida and beyond.


Dr. Sanjay Shukla

Sanjay Shukla, Assistant Professor

Dr. Shukla was awarded the Dallas Townsend Extension Professional Enhancement Award.The award recognizes extension faculty with a term professorship for creative contributions and outreach programs.Candidates must have a distinguished current Extension program which places them among the leaders in their programming area. 


Bernard Cardenas-Lailhacar

Bernard Cardenas-Lailhacar, Graduate Student

Bernard was awarded second place for his M.S. Graduate Student Research Paper during the 2006 ASABE meeting. The award recognizes excellence in the conduct and presentation of research to build the knowledge based needed by engineers who design equipment, facilities, and processes for the sustainable operation of a biological system.


Bernard Cardenas-Lailhacar

Magalie Laniel, Graduate Student

Magalie was awarded a $25,000 scholarship by the International Air Cargo Association as the recipient of the 2006 Walter H. Johnson, Jr. Ph.D. Award. The scholarship will be used to fund her research topic "Potential uses and challenges of RFID in air freight of perishables and dangerous goods".

Swisher Eminent Scholar & Director UF Water Institute

Dr. Wendy Graham received the 2006 Distinguished Achievement Award from the ASABE Florida Section, which is awarded to an individual who is active in the state section and in the profession of Agricultural Engineering. She has been a member of ASABE for 16 years, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2005.


Lawrance Shaw

Dr. Lawrance Shaw received the 2006 Special Recognition Award from the ASABE Florida Section, which is presented to an individual who is a leader in the Agricultural Engineering profession. The award recognizes Dr. Shaw's outstanding representation of the profession through his work.


Kevin Wright

Kevin Wright, ABE Alumnus

Kevin received the 2006 Outstanding Student Award from the ASABE Florida Section. Kevin is a recent graduate of the ABE program and is currently employed by the SRWMD. While at UF he participated in many activities and held various memberships in student organizations including president of the student ASABE club, member of the ABE 2005 student “Fountain Wars” team, member of the Deans Advisory Committee for CALS, service chair for Alpha Gamma Ro, and treasurer for the Agricultural & Life Sciences College Council

Dr. Baird received recognition from the Florida Section for 40 year membership in ASABE.


ASABE PAPER AWARD RECIPIENTS

Irmak Ayse, James W. Jones and Shirkant Jagtap were presented with a 2006 Honorable Mention Paper Award at the annual ASABE meeting. The paper was titled "Evaluation of the CROPGRO-Soybean Model for Assessing Climate Impacts on Regional Soybean Yields". ASABE Paper Awards are selected annually from papers of engineering merit published during the prior year in ASABE publications.


Robin Snyder

Robin received a 2006 IFAS Silver Image Award for her submission of undergraduate student recruitment brochures for Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Agricultural Operations Management and Packaging Science.


Elsa Susana Sepulveda-Bustos

Elsa Susana Sepúlveda Bustos

Susana recently became the first graduate from the Doctoral Agricultural Engineering program at the University of Concepción, Chile.  Ms. Sepúlveda, specializing in Water Resources in Agriculture, was not only the first woman to obtain the Ph.D. but also the first doctor in the discipline from a Chilean University.

Under an exchange program with the University of Florida, Sepúlveda conducted her doctoral research at UF’s Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department working under the direction of Drs. Ray Bucklin and Fedro Zazueta.


Jasmeet Judge

Jasmeet Judge, Assistant Professor

Dr. Jasmeet Judge was selected as the 2006 recipient of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Region D Faculty Advisor Award. The award is presented to the Faculty Advisor that has supported their collegiate section the best on the university level based on involvement and guidance. The award was presented to Dr. Judge (r) by UF student chapter representative Prinda Wanakule.


Nicole Cerrato

Nicole Cerrato, Student-Packaging Science

Nicole was selected as the recipient of the Kathleen Brady-Zito Memorial Scholarship from the New Jersey Packaging Executive's Club (NPJEC). She was also selected as a winner of the 2006 "Paper Competition on the Technological Innovation in the Packaging Machinery Industry That Will Bring You to Italy!" Nicole, a student in the UF Packaging Science Program, joined winners from other packaging education programs for a complimentary 2-week trip to Italy to visit Italian packaging companies.

IFAS Superior Accomplishment Awards

ABE staff members Ralph Hoffman, coordinator of research programs, and engineer Orlando Lanni were presented with 2006 Superior Accomplishment Awards from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).


Greg Kiker

Greg Kiker, Assistant Professor

Dr. Greg Kiker received an 'Internationalizing the Curriculum' Award from the UF International Center for his proposal to add international components to two departmental courses.
