2006 ABE Awards and Recognitions

Wendell Porter, Lecturer

Dr. Wendell Porter was selected as a 2006 Outstanding Educator in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Dr. Porter was nominated by AOM student Roger Gayle. The award recognizes faculty whose support and guidance helped students accomplish their academic goals.

James JonesJames Jones, Distinguished Professor

Dr. Jim Jones was selected as a recipient of the 2006 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award by The National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) Commission on International Programs. This award provides national recognition for a career of outstanding contributions that furthers international education of state and land-grant institutions. Dr. Jones was also named a Fellow by the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). The award is presented to members who have made outstanding contributions in their area of specialization.

Ken CampbellKen Campbell, Professor and Interim Chair

Dr. Kenneth Campbell is the recipient of the 2006 Hancor Soil and Water Engineering Award for his expertise and accomplishments in the area of soil and water engineering through research, teaching, technology transfer and service activities. He was honored for his leadership and contributions toward watershed protection through the development of improved prediction models for runoff volume, peak rate and nutrient load.

Robert PeartRobert Peart, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Robert Peart was awarded the 2006 Cyrus Hall McCormick-Jerome Increase Case Gold Medal Award for exceptional and meritorius engineering achievements. He was honored for his commitment and contributions to teaching and research in the application of computer simulation technology that has addressed a wide range of complex agricultural problems.

Fedro ZazuetaFedro Zazueta
Professor & Director Office of Academic Technology

Dr. Fedro Zazueta was awarded the ASABE Outstanding Leadership Award for his efforts and successes promoting the use of information technology in agriculture. Dr. Zazueta helped to found and organize the first four World Congresses on Computers in Agriculture, the premier conference concerning information technology in agriculture. He was also selected as the 2006 Florida Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta nominee for the International GSD Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.   This award recognizes Dr. Zazueta's superior leadership in teaching, research, extension, and service to Florida and beyond.

Dr. Sanjay ShuklaSanjay Shukla, Assistant Professor

Dr. Shukla was awarded the Dallas Townsend Extension Professional Enhancement Award.The award recognizes extension faculty with a term professorship for creative contributions and outreach programs. Candidates must have a distinguished current Extension program which places them among the leaders in their programming area. 

Bernard Cardenas-LailhacarBernard Cardenas-Lailhacar, Graduate Student

Bernard was awarded second place for his M.S. Graduate Student Research Paper during the 2006 ASABE meeting. The award recognizes excellence in the conduct and presentation of research to build the knowledge based needed by engineers who design equipment, facilities, and processes for the sustainable operation of a biological system.

Bernard Cardenas-LailhacarMagalie Laniel, Graduate Student

Magalie was awarded a $25,000 scholarship by the International Air Cargo Association as the recipient of the 2006 Walter H. Johnson, Jr. Ph.D. Award. The scholarship will be used to fund her research topic "Potential uses and challenges of RFID in air freight of perishables and dangerous goods".

Wendy GrahamWendy Graham
Swisher Eminent Scholar & Director UF Water Institute

Dr. Wendy Graham received the 2006 Distinguished Achievement Award from the ASABE Florida Section, which is awarded to an individual who is active in the state section and in the profession of Agricultural Engineering. She has been a member of ASABE for 16 years, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2005.

Lawrance ShawLawrance Shaw, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Lawrance Shaw received the 2006 Special Recognition Award from the ASABE Florida Section, which is presented to an individual who is a leader in the Agricultural Engineering profession. The award recognizes Dr. Shaw's outstanding representation of the profession through his work.

Kevin WrightKevin Wright, ABE Alumnus

Kevin received the 2006 Outstanding Student Award from the ASABE Florida Section. Kevin is a recent graduate of the ABE program and is currently employed by the SRWMD. While at UF he participated in many activities and held various memberships in student organizations including president of the student ASABE club, member of the ABE 2005 student “Fountain Wars” team, member of the Deans Advisory Committee for CALS, service chair for Alpha Gamma Ro, and treasurer for the Agricultural & Life Sciences College Council

Direlle BairdDirelle Baird, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Baird received recognition from the Florida Section for 40 year membership in ASABE.

ASABE Paper Award Recipients

Irmak Ayse, James W. Jones and Shirkant Jagtap were presented with a 2006 Honorable Mention Paper Award at the annual ASABE meeting. The paper was titled "Evaluation of the CROPGRO-Soybean Model for Assessing Climate Impacts on Regional Soybean Yields". ASABE Paper Awards are selected annually from papers of engineering merit published during the prior year in ASABE publications.

Robin SnyderRobin Snyder, Coordinator-Information/Publications

Robin received a 2006 IFAS Silver Image Award for her submission of undergraduate student recruitment brochures for Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Agricultural Operations Management and Packaging Science.

Elsa Susana Sepulveda-BustosElsa Susana Sepúlveda Bustos

Susana recently became the first graduate from the Doctoral Agricultural Engineering program at the University of Concepción, Chile.  Ms. Sepúlveda, specializing in Water Resources in Agriculture, was not only the first woman to obtain the Ph.D. but also the first doctor in the discipline from a Chilean University.

Under an exchange program with the University of Florida, Sepúlveda conducted her doctoral research at UF’s Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department working under the direction of Drs. Ray Bucklin and Fedro Zazueta.

Jasmeet JudgeJasmeet Judge, Assistant Professor

Dr. Jasmeet Judge was selected as the 2006 recipient of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Region D Faculty Advisor Award. The award is presented to the Faculty Advisor that has supported their collegiate section the best on the university level based on involvement and guidance. The award was presented to Dr. Judge (r) by UF student chapter representative Prinda Wanakule.

Nicole CerratoNicole Cerrato, Student-Packaging Science

Nicole was selected as the recipient of the Kathleen Brady-Zito Memorial Scholarship from the New Jersey Packaging Executive's Club (NPJEC). She was also selected as a winner of the 2006 "Paper Competition on the Technological Innovation in the Packaging Machinery Industry That Will Bring You to Italy!" Nicole, a student in the UF Packaging Science Program, joined winners from other packaging education programs for a complimentary 2-week trip to Italy to visit Italian packaging companies.

Hoffman & LanniIFAS Superior Accomplishment Awards

ABE staff members Ralph Hoffman, coordinator of research programs, and engineer Orlando Lanni were presented with 2006 Superior Accomplishment Awards from the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS).

Greg KikerGreg Kiker, Assistant Professor

Dr. Greg Kiker received an 'Internationalizing the Curriculum' Award from the UF International Center for his proposal to add international components to two departmental courses.
